Well, it’s been around thirty years since Barnaby's been reprinted, about four years since I got a fifty-year-old volume of it from a friend, and a year since I put in my pre-order, but I can finally say I have Barnaby: Volume One in my hands, the first collection of the comic that could possibly claim to be definitive. It has both contemporary and new writings on the series, ads and newspaper clippings of the comic, scraps of other Johnson’s work, a “Handy Pocket Guide” for the comic’s WWII-era jargon, and—of course—the complete first two years of Barnaby itself, some of which hasn’t been reprinted in seventy-odd years, all courtesy of the brilliant folks over at Fantagraphics Books, Incorporated.
